Cashier charged with embezzling nearly $500,000

April 06, 2022

A St Catherine cashier accused of stealing almost $500,0000 from her employer had her bail extended when she appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court yesterday.

She is charged with eight counts of embezzlement. The allegations are that between August and October 2020, while the accused was employed at a Corporate Area restaurant, she embezzled $422,654 from it. It is alleged that when customers made payments using debit or credit cards, the accused produced duplicate receipts from point of sale terminal and then used the duplicates to apply to cash payments made by other customers. It is further alleged that she pocketed the cash equivalent to the amount on the duplicate receipts and, at the end of her shifts, would submit the duplicate receipts to indicate that payment was made using a debit or credit card. Following an audit at the restaurant, a report was made to the police. The cashier was later arrested and charged.

When the matter was mentioned before Senior Parish Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montague, the prosecution requested an adjournment in the matter as bank statements are still outstanding to complete the file. The accused, who is currently on $100,000 bail, is to return to court on June 28. She is represented by attorney-at-law Davian Vassell.
