The police in St James say that major anti-gang, anti-vending, traffic enforcement, and public order operations in the parish today were a success.

The operations which started as early as 6 am, included joint efforts from other agencies such as members of the Jamaica Defence Force, and the Island Traffic Authority (ITA).

"A lot of vehicles licenses plates were taken, and a lot of arrests were made. As for the public order anti-vending initiative, we have seized a lot of goods,” explained Eron Samuels Deputy Superintendent of Operations.

Samuels also confirmed that the agencies involved have seen an increase in adherence to the rules of the road thanks to the operations.

Assistant Operations Officer for St James, Theodore Hayles, told the Star that several raids within the township and outskirts of Montego Bay targeted members of the G City Gang.

“Persons were also arrested for lottery scamming, and even for possession of several pounds of Ganja and offensive weapons," Hayles said confidently.

Another member of the police force, Dellon Lewis, says he and his team travelled all the way from Kingston to aid their colleagues with the “carnage” and “lawlessness” in Montego Bay.

“The operations have produced over 200 traffic tickets and we are also with the ITA personnel. They have identified and removed over 50 defective vehicles,” said Dellon Lewis, Assistant Superintendent of Police from the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement branch.

Lewis says the operations will for the rest of the day and should continue until the agencies see it fit and safe enough for citizens to enjoy this “beautiful” island.
