Brilliant GK Foster denies Tivoli in JPL
Goalkeeper Kemar Foster pulled off a string of impressive saves on Monday night at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex to help Waterhouse FC return to the top of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
Waterhouse clipped Tivoli Gardens 1-0, but the scoreline was not a true reflection of the run of play.
Devroy Grey came off the bench to net the game's only goal in the 74th minute. The Caribbean Club Championships semi-finalists moved to 42 points and reclaimed top spot in the league on goal difference, after Dunbeholden.
However, Tivoli Gardens overran their opponents in the first half and had it not been for a string of impressive saves from Foster, the Drewsland-based club could have been four goals down at the break.
Waterhouse improved slightly after the break, and moments after coming off the bench, Grey broke loose and lobbed Kewong Watkins for the winner.
"We have to be grateful," Foster said afterwards. "It wasn't a great first half performance. But I have to perform like that every time to give my team a chance in games.
"As you saw, the first half was very poor. In the second half we picked it up a little bit, and that helped us get the win.
He added that despite their subpar display, they accomplished their objective for the game.
"I feel good; we are back in the lead. I want to thank God for everything tonight, because if you watched the first half, you wouldn't think we would get anything out of the game, but we dug deep and got the win," he stated.
Tivoli's coach, Glendon Bailey, said he knew the wasted opportunities would come back to haunt them.
"We tried to get the three points this evening and the guys gave it their all. Our only problem was the goalkeeper. The Waterhouse goalkeeper had an excellent game. He kept them in the game," Bailey said.
Meanwhile, Tivoli stayed sixth in the standings with 25 points from 20 matches, one more than Harbour View, who have a game in hand.
In Monday's early game, Mount Pleasant beat Arnett Gardens 1-0 to move up to third in the standings on 37 points. Arnett Gardens are in fourth with 36.
