An M-16 rifle and a handgun, which fell from a policeman after he was allegedly hit off his motor cycle in downtown Kingston about midnight on Friday, were recovered by a civilian and handed over to lawmen.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force has been guarded about the incident, except to say that the injured cop was in recovery.

"He is doing okay, and recovering well," head of the police's Corporate Communications Unit, Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, told THE STAR.

The policeman, a constable, reportedly sustained injuries to his neck, arms, legs and head after he was hit from the government-issued motorcycle. The cop, who reportedly split up with his colleagues, was said to have completed duties in Spanish Town, St Catherine, and was returning to base when the crash occurred. He was unconscious for several minutes before help arrived. THE STAR understands that while the policeman laid helpless on the ground, a civilian secured his weapons and then handed them over to the police when they arrived on the scene.

"Likkle after the police arrived, a man draw a squaddie one side fi mek him know bout the two guns dem. Dem carry di police inna one yard nearby and show dem weh di gun dem lock off," a law enforcement source disclosed.
