Pregnant teacher mowed down in hit-and-run

A kindergarten teacher who is said to be several months pregnant was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital in Westmoreland, after she was mowed down in Bickersteth, St James, on Tuesday morning by a motor vehicle whose driver fled the scene.

Reports by the police are that about 8 a.m., the teacher, who resides in Bickersteth, left her house and was heading towards a shop in the community. On reaching a section of the roadway, the driver of a dark coloured Toyota motor car reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which mowed down the teacher before crashing into a utility pole. Investigators revealed that driver sped away from the scene, while the injured woman was rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where she was admitted in critical condition.

Up to press time yesterday, the injured teacher who teaches at a school in Reading, St James, was still in the intensive care unit. There was also no word on the condition of the baby. Investigators say that they have launched a manhunt to apprehend the driver. The police say they are also asking members of the public who can assist them in their investigation to contact the Anchovy police at 956-4100, police emergency at 119, or the nearest police station.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist and a female pillion died from injuries they sustained in a crash along a section of the Little London main road in Westmoreland yesterday morning.

The victims have been identified as Amefika Spence and Kimani Cornish, both of Little London. Reports by the Little London police are that about 1 a.m., Cornish and Spence were travelling on a motor cycle which was being driven by Cornish. Further reports are that on reaching a section of the roadway known as Bay Road, Cornish lost control of the motorcycle which crashed into the rear of a truck.

Both Spence and Cornish were flung from the motorcycle and sustained severe head and body injuries. They were rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where they were pronounced dead. The Road Safety Unit is reporting that as of yesterday, 245 persons have died in 218 fatal road crashes. Motorcyclists account for 26 per cent of the fatalities.
