Woman admits to making false rape claim

July 28, 2022

A social enquiry report was requested for a 24-year-old woman who made a fake report that she was abducted and raped by a bus driver.

The request was made by parish judge Jacqueline Wilcott after the defendant Samantha Campbell pleaded guilty to public mischief.

It was reported on May 31, 2021, that Campbell visited the offices of the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse and reported that she was abducted and raped by a bus driver the previous day. An investigation commenced and it was revealed that the report was false. Campbell's lawyer, in a plea mitigation, submitted to the court that her client feared the individual.

"Your Honour, this is a situation where she was involved in a relationship with someone outside of her usual and because the relationship was abusive, she was afraid of that individual. She said that she was raped. It was out of fear and so Your Honour, I ask the court to take that into consideration," the lawyer said.

The matter was adjourned until November 29 when Campbell is expected to be sentenced.
