With a top score of 390.8, or 97.85 per cent, in her Primary Exit Profile (PEP) tests, Shalala Morris stood tall among her peers at the 2022 instalment of the Beecher Foundation Scholarships.

The Horizon Park Primary School student was among 52 students from eight primary schools in St Catherine who benefited from scholarships amounting to $500,000.

Morris, who will be going to St Jago High School in September, said her career choice is medicine.

"I think that I have done very well in school, as there are dedicated teachers who took the time to give me the assistance necessary," Morris said. "My parents take education seriously and it helps to keep me focused."

The foundation, which is commemorating 19 years as a non-profit organisation, continues to support education through its annual donations. The latest scholarship presentations were held on Sunday at the Oneness Apostolic Church in Sydenham, St Catherine.

"This foundation is being held to honour the memory of my parents, Mavis and Clifford Beecher, who died years ago," Claude Beecher said. He added that his resolve has been strengthened by his wife Pauline, who continues to support the commitment.

"We made a commitment in 2003 that we would serve the less fortunate students who do well in their examinations. Through the assistance of the Apostolic Church and kind donors we remain committed," he said. Beecher said that the effort to get the sponsors can be an arduous task, but the donations always come in.

In addition to the scholarships, the Shernette King-Nicholas-led Horizon Park Primary won trophies for the highest PEP average.

Morris, who did the vote of thanks, told the audience that she is determined to continue pursuing her career objectives.

The other schools to benefit were Homestead Primary, Crescent Primary, Time and Patience Primary, Jericho Primary, Cedar Valley Primary, Simon Primary and Bermaddy Primary.
