Cops nab alleged car thieves

One of four alleged car thieves who was nabbed by the St Andrew South police yesterday after reportedly hijacking a motorist, was released from lock-up just three days prior.

Head of the St Andrew South Police Division, Senior Superintendent Kirk Ricketts, said at least two of the persons were known criminals within the division and have been in and out of their custody.

"One of the men was just released on Sunday from the Duhaney Park [Police] Station, where he is at now. He was arrested on reasonable suspicion in relation to some gang-related activities. But of course, with not getting support of witnesses, he was released on Sunday, only for him to days later be back in our custody. We are thankful that no one was killed, because at least one of the persons is heavily related in gang-related activities, including murders," he said.

Reports are that a woman was driving in a section of Portmore when she and her child were pounced upon by the robbers, who stole her Honda Fit motorcar shortly after 7 a.m. The robbers were reportedly intercepted by the police along Mandela Highway.

In addition to the stolen vehicle, the police also seized another car, which they believe was being used as a pilot. Another man escaped and is being sought by the police. Ricketts said the police are alert for all acts of criminality.

"We are going to be partnering with other sister divisions, and that can be seen this morning [yesterday]. The incident occurred in St Catherine South and within split seconds, it was relayed all across the Corporate Area immediately; and most of the resources along the corridor in which we believe the men were travelling were alerted, and we were able to create that type of dragnet to intercept the culprits," he said. Ricketts also had advice for motorists.

"Drive with your windows up and doors locked, but if you are being attacked and your valuables are being taken...cooperate," Ricketts added.
