Couple’s fight ends up at police station

A St James woman who reportedly threw bottles at her common-law partner during a fight at a police station will undergo a psychiatric evaluation after appearing in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday.

Melrose Brimmer, of a Lilliput address, is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, malicious destruction of property, and resisting arrest, while her partner, Astley Walker, is charged with committing unlawful wounding against her. The court was told that the couple, who have reportedly had several disputes, were involved in a fight on October 1, during which Brimmer attacked Walker with a stone. When Walker went to make a report at the police station, Brimmer reportedly flung bottles at him and then resisted an officer who tried to restrain her. It is further alleged that Walker used a stone to hit Brimmer in the head during another argument on October 1.

During the court proceedings, Walker's lawyer Ronald Parris urged presiding parish judge Sasha Ashley to issue a restraining order against Brimmer, who he described as uncontrollable. Brimmer accused the lawyer of lying, despite the court officers ordering her to be quiet. When questioned directly, Brimmer denied resisting the police and accused a lawman of kicking her off the staircase.

"When we went to the station I saw the man [Walker] 'set' like a star," Brimmer insisted, crossing her arms dramatically.

"I know you are anxious to tell me your side, but before we get to your side, I'm going to have the doctor have a chat with you so I can know whether to offer you bail," Judge Ashley replied.

Brimmer was subsequently remanded until November 29, at which time a psychiatric evaluation and two outstanding medical certificates are to be submitted for the case file. Walker, who remained silent throughout the proceedings, had his bail extended to that date.
