Dead Westmoreland carpenter hailed as good father

Friday the 13th is considered to be an unlucky day, but the superstitions about the day may have been furthest from Gregory Jones' mind when he left home last week and went to work at Whitehouse Beach Club in his Westmoreland community.

Jones, who also goes by the name Cappo, met a terrible end after he fell from the room of the building, on to a piece of steel which impaled him.

Sandrene Lewis, Jones' common-law-wife, said he was more than a partner.

"Him is more than a babyfather to mi," Lewis said. I don't think I will ever meet or see or hear about another man like Gregory Jones. Gregory a family man.

Struggling to fight back the tears, Lewis said that Jones was more than a father to his three children, one of who is a stepchild. She said that he "worshipped the dirt" on which the children walked and did everything to ensure their comfort.

"Nuttin nuh too good fi Gregory fi do fi dem," she said.

"Gregory was a jovial person, a loving person, a caring and hard-working person. When mi seh hard-working [I mean], hard-working! Sometimes Gregory wuk deh suh, him cum home and him have anything else him still a do it," Lewis told THE STAR.

His death has left dozens of persons including Lewis and his three children traumatised.

Following Jones death on the weekend, Moreland Development Company Limited issued a release expressing sadness over his death.

"The company is committed to provide as much clarity as possible regarding the circumstances surrounding this devastating accident, Mr Jones was carrying out general construction work on a unit under construction when he lost his balance and fell on a protruding piece of steel, Mr Jones was impaled by the object in his mid-torso," the release stated.

Moorland Development said their company's safety policies also mandate that there is a vehicle designated for safety and security always on the site, and the vehicle, which was immediately mobilised, transported Jones to the Black River Hospital where he died while being treated.
