Student breaks leg over $100

Principal of Cornwall College in Montego Bay, St James, Michael Ellis, has confirmed that a student broke his leg yesterday after jumping from the first floor of a building in an attempt to retrieve some money that fell from his hand.

The sum of money is believed to be $100. Videos of the aftermath of the incident began circulating on social media. The student reportedly jumped from the first floor of the industrial arts building of the school. Ellis said that the student told him that he jumped instead of taking the stairs because he thought he would reach the ground faster to recover his money. Ellis encouraged other students to think before making rash decisions.

"The student is now being treated at hospital and he is in the company of his father, and although he suffered a fractured leg, it is not considered to be life-threatening," Ellis told THE STAR. This newspaper also learnt that following the incident, Ellis issued a release to stakeholders informing them of the incident, which he referred to as a regrettable situation that occurred about 11:40 a.m. The release also stated that after the student injured himself, he was assisted to the nursing station by security officers and members of the cadet corps. While he was given medical treatment, his parents were informed and an ambulance summoned. He was accompanied to hospital by his father.
