‘Is like cat and mouse game a play’ - One man shot as gunmen continue brazen Maxfield shootings
An elderly man said that he had to duck for cover behind a vehicle in an attempt to prevent being shot, as armed thugs travelling in a motor car sprayed the intersection of Whitfield Avenue and Rose Town yesterday.
One man was shot and injured in the attack that occurred in broad daylight, minutes after 1 p.m.
"The car a come down the road and just bare shot start fire. The youth who get shot did stand up beside the light post. Is walk mi a walk and a push the bicycle up the road and everything just start happen. Mi have to duck behind a car suh nothing nuh reach mi," he said.
Police officers, who have been operating in the area for months, recovered at least 16 spent casings at the scene.
The drive-by shooting occurred shortly after members of the Joint Anti-Gang Task Force had conducted a major operation in the Sunlight Street and Lincoln Road area of the Kingston Western Division. The operation was aimed at disrupting gang activities in the area.
Security posts were still observed within the embattled space.
Sections of Maxfield Avenue have been tense for months amid several shootings and murders.
A resident told THE STAR that nowhere is safe and as a result they keep cowering in fear. The resident, who requested anonymity, stated that the gunmen are always a step or two ahead of the security forces.
"Is like a cat and mouse game a play because the police and soldiers dem round here a lot and we feel good dem deh here, but is like man a watch dem and just attack as them move," the resident analysed.
"One a di issue is that the gunman dem know di place like dem hand back so dem aguh always ahead of the police. Somebody always on the lookout and yuh don't know a who, suh nobody is safe," the resident continued. "Da war yah make good good people pack up dem belongings and run weh."
