Transport group wants fare hike
A group which claims to represent the interest of public passenger transport sector says it plans to submit a request for a fare increase to the minister of transport.
The group, which calls itself the National Transportation Steering Committee (NTSC), said the request comes as a result of a "steady rise in costs associated with running and maintaining transportation services across the country".
Bus and taxi fares were last increased in 2021. At that time, the Transport Authority announced a 15 per cent hike. Since then, public transport operators have been clamouring for another increase, arguing that their cost of operating have risen astronomically.
In a media release issued over the names of Dian Dennis and Everton Style yesterday, the NTSC said it understands the implications of a fare increase on the public at this time, especially given the challenging economic environment. However, it said that the adjustment is necessary.
"The proposed fare increase aims to address various operational costs and service improvements necessary to enhance the quality of services to the public. The committee is of the view that a fare increase will enable the industry to continue providing safe, efficient, and reliable transportation that meets the needs of commuters," the lobby group said.
It is unclear how long the NTSC has been in existence and the number of transport operators it represents. Attempts to contact Dennis, the NTSC's advocacy and public mobilisation officer, and Style, its acting chairman, proved futile up to press time last night.
