Teen killed in road crash

A 19-year-old is dead and several other persons were admitted to hospital in serious condition, following a three-vehicle crash on a section of the Rose Hall main road in Montego Bay, St James, yesterday.

The deceased has been identified as Marceno Campbell, of Princess Street in Montego Bay. Reports by the police are that about 2:30 a.m., Campbell and a group of friends were travelling in a grey 2015 Toyota Noah, heading from Greenwood towards downtown Montego Bay. The men were reportedly returning from a party. On reaching the vicinity of the Half Moon Hotel and Sugar Mill Road, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which hit the concrete median, crashed into a metal sign pole, and overturned.

The driver of a Subaru motor car which was travelling behind the Noah, applied his brakes to avoid crashing into it. However, a white Toyota Mark X motor car, which was also travelling in the same direction, then collided with the Subaru. All three vehicles were extensively damaged. Campbell was thrown from the Noah onto the embankment and was run over by the Mark X.

He sustained head and body injuries and died on the spot. The driver of the Noah, one of his passengers, as well as the driver of the Mark X and two of his passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where they were treated and admitted.

The Area One Accident Reconstruction Unit has reported that since the start of the year, six persons have been killed in six road crashes in St James.

As of May 24, the Road Safety Unit said 161 lives have been lost to road crashes in 148 fatal collisions.
