Women in bar brawl get new court date

June 01, 2023

The case against a St James woman who reportedly stabbed another with scissors during a bar fight in the parish has been adjourned until June 21, to allow for checks into the defendant's claim that she had made a report against the complainant.

Antonetta Wedderburn, who is charged with unlawful wounding, had her bail extended when her case was mentioned in the St James Parish Court yesterday.

Allegations are that on April 18, the complainant was working as a bartender at her establishment on Union Street in Montego Bay, when Wedderburn, who was a patron in the bar, got into a fight with another patron. The complainant intervened in the brawl, and Wedderburn stabbed her in her left arm with a pair of scissors.

During Wednesday's court proceedings, presiding Judge Sasha-Marie Ashley was told that although the parties had attended mediation sessions to discuss their differences, the mediation was not successful.

"What is the problem? You are the one who is charged," Judge Ashley told Wedderburn.

"It was a fight, and I was only defending myself, as they were the ones who attacked me. All now, the police don't arrest them," the aggrieved Wedderburn replied. She said that she made a police report which, to date, has reportedly not been acted upon.

Judge Ashley subsequently ordered Wedderburn and the complainant to return to court on June 21, when the case will again be mentioned.
