Hurricane watch issued for St Lucia as Tropical Storm Bret strengthens

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Jun. 22, CMC- A hurricane watch has been issued for St Lucia on Thursday as Tropical Storm Bret continues to strengthen.

In a bulletin issued on Friday morning, the Miami based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said the eye of Tropical Storm Bret was located near latitude 13.8 North, longitude 57.7 West.  

Bret is moving westward near 14 mph (22 km/h) and an increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days as it moves across the Lesser Antilles on Thursday evening.

The National Hurricane Centre says a Tropical Storm Warning in effect for Dominica, St Lucia and Martinique. While a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for  Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines

Meanwhile in St Lucia, airports, businesses, schools and offices were closed on Thursday  in St Lucia, while in  Dominica as forecasters have warned of torrential downpours, landslides, and flooding.

“Protect your lives, property, and livelihoods,” urged St Lucian Prime Minister Philip Pierre.
