Fire destroys Clarendon mattress store

The Super Firm Mattress Centre along Main Street in Spalding, Clarendon was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin about midday on Tuesday.

It is reported that the owner of the store was attending to business when he saw smoke coming from the back of the building.

He proceeded to investigate what was causing the smoke when discovered a board fence on fire. He tried to extinguish the flame with water but his effort was futile. 

The fire escalated out of control and was in the process of encroaching on a neighbouring petrol station.

Firefighters attached to the Christiana and Mandeville fire departments managed to put out the blaze before it could spread. 

No injuries have been reported.
