Man shot in betting shop squabble
A man who reportedly tried to stab an off-duty policeman who went to purchase a lottery ticket inside a betting shop, did not have the best of luck after the cop shot and injured him.
The alleged incident happened on March 26 at 12:20 p.m., at a bar located in Vineyard Town, St Andrew. The accused, Michael Bitter, appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, and had to be assisted by crutches. It was reported that the cop went to purchase a lottery ticket and saw the defendant leaving from the counter. The cop asked Bitter if he was finished making his purchase, to which Bitter allegedly responded, "Yuh nuh see me a talk to the girl."
Both men got involved in a heated verbal exchange, which resulted in Bitter pulling a knife, and threatening the policeman. Bitter, according to the report, advanced towards the cop, making an attempt to stab him. However, the policeman pulled his service weapon and discharged one round in Bitter's left leg.
Bitter was subsequently charged with assault at common law and being armed with an offensive weapon. The matter, which was heard by Parish Judge Leighton Morris was adjourned prematurely as Bitter's attorney was not present in court to advance the proceedings.
Bitter is to return to court on September 9, when the matter is set for mention.
