A St James man who smashed the windshield of his neighbour's bus during a confrontation has been ordered by the St James Parish Court to pay $26,000 in compensation by August 18.

Doneil Wright, of a Maldon address, got the compensation order when he appeared in court last week on the charge of malicious destruction of property. The court was told that on June 20, at 5:30 p.m., Wright and the complainant got into an argument at the defendant's home. Wright then used a stone to smash the windshield of the complainant's bus.

But in outlining his version of events, Wright told presiding Judge Sasha-Marie Ashley that the complainant attacked him with a machete and he defended himself.

"Mi deh inna mi yard a cook mi food and him [complainant] threaten me, and him say him know who fi send after me. Him a molest me ... and him run at me with a machete," Wright explained.

"Him run into him bus fi try escape, and mi fling di stone inna di bus. Mi want him leave me alone ... ," Wright added.

After the matter was briefly stood down, the court was subsequently told that Wright was willing to pay $26,000 in restitution.

Following that disclosure, Judge Ashley admonished and discharged Wright on the malicious destruction of property charge, while ordering that he should make the compensation payment at the Maroon Town Police Station.
