MoBay murder accused remanded until October 31

Kimani Alcott, the St James man accused of the 2021 murder of Jamaican-Canadian resident Collin Wright, had his bail hearing's outcome postponed to October 31 following his latest appearance in the St James Parish Court last Thursday.

Alcott, who previously appeared in court on August 2, was remanded following his bail hearing before presiding Parish Judge Sasha-Marie Ashley after she admitted to not being able to decide his fate at that time.

Allegations are that shortly after 7 p.m. on January 12, 2021, Wright, who hailed from Mississauga, Canada, was sitting with a relative in their yard in Bottom Cambridge, St James, when two men entered a shop on the premises and ordered cigarettes and rum.

On being told that the requested items were not available, the men left the premises. They returned sometime later, one of them brandishing a handgun, and opened fire multiple times before fleeing. Wright, who was shot, was later pronounced dead at the Cornwall Regional Hospital. Following police investigations, Alcott was taken into custody and charged with Wright's murder.

In applying for bail on Thursday, Alcott's lawyer Chumu Parris argued that the prosecution witness' statement, which was given to the police regarding the incident, did not match a later statement that he provided.

"The witness did not see the killing, but when he reviewed the security footage, he said it was the same men who came earlier that day. He reportedly said, 'Can I ask him [Alcott] to move, because the man walks with a limp', but the statement makes no mention of him being able to identify the accused by the way he walks, and the identification parade serves no useful purpose," said Parris.

However, the prosecution opposed bail on the grounds that Alcott had a previous gun-related charge, and because of concerns that he might interfere with the witness. It was also disclosed that the prosecution's case-file was incomplete.
