Man beaten over faeces
Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque on Wednesday suggested that the social infrastructure has failed Jamaica's citizens, after it was shared that two Corporate Area men got into a dispute over a restroom.
According to details shared by the prosecutors in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court, the defendant, Donnell Wright, punched the complainant in his face, after seeing faeces in an area where they take baths. Wright and the complainant are among a dozen adults living in a yard. More than five children reportedly occupy the premises as well.
"This is where I believe the social services of the country has failed because how can 12 persons be using one bathroom? You are bound to have problems," Cole-Montaque expressed, the disgust evident in her tone.
Wright pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, after confessing that he swung his fist, hitting the old man. The complainant indicated that he would accept compensation and would "work with anything" the judge suggested.
Cole-Montaque ordered Wright to make compensation in the sum of $90,000. He is to return to court on November 17 when a first payment of $30,000 is to be made. Sentencing was postponed until then.
