Wanted man caught using fake name
Saroyan Brown, the man implicated in the shooting death of cable technician Kemar Wilson in Catherine Hall, St James, was remanded following a failed bail application in the St James Parish Court last Friday.
Presiding Parish Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton ordered that Brown, who appeared in court wearing a neck brace, should be remanded after the prosecution opposed bail on the grounds that he was arrested in St Thomas and identified himself as Frank Allen to the police.
"I wasn't aware that persons could change their names outside of the legal means of a deed poll. This accused man took on a name and took himself out of the parish of St James, and even after he was apprehended, he continued to maintain this new name that he took on for himself," Fairclough-Hylton remarked.
Brown's attorney Khadine Colman asserted that the defendant relocated from St James due to report threats made against him, and that he was not in the area when Wilson was killed. Colman also alleged that her client had been beaten by police officers and said that a report was made to the Independent Commission of Investigations.
However, the prosecution pointed out that Wilson was identified as a person of interest on the Jamaica Constabulary Force's 'Wanted Wednesdays' feature prior to his arrest, and asserted that he was a potential flight risk. The court was also told that the ballistic report had not yet been added to the prosecution's case file.
The judge ordered that Brown should remain in custody until May 24, with the prosecution's document bundle to be served to Colman by May 15. The judge also ordered that Brown should be taken for medical treatment.
According to reports, on August 5, 2022, Wilson was at a shop alongside other persons when gunmen approached and shot him and another patron before fleeing the scene. Wilson was subsequently pronounced dead at hospital and the injured patron admitted.
