Teachers making use of ‘Own Your Own Device’ initiative

Approximately 25,700 electronic vouchers (e-vouchers) have been issued to educators under the ongoing 'Own Your Own Device' (OYOD) initiative'.

This is a joint initiative between e-Learning Jamaica Limited (e-LJAM) and the Ministry of Education and Youth. Under the initiative, e-LJAM, is responsible for promoting the integration and infusion of technology in the public education system and is committed to disbursing 26,000 e-vouchers under the OYOD programme, which will assist educators to purchase a laptop from an approved vendor.

Andrew Lee, CEO of e-LJAM, told the Jamaica Information Service that nearly 24,000 teachers have already redeemed their vouchers.

"We are in an era that we cannot escape, and we must use technology to enhance the teaching and learning experience. With all the emerging technologies, teachers can engage in a more meaningful way with their students," said Lee. He said that e-LJAM and the education ministry are working to deliver the remaining e-vouchers by June.

Lee said teachers will receive the e-voucher via email or SMS text message after his team verifies that the information provided in their applications are above board. Participating vendors from which educators can obtain devices are listed on the vouchers.
