Woman beats senior citizen with stick
A St James woman who admitted to beating a senior citizen will be brought back to the St James Parish Court for sentencing next month.
Charmaine Campbell, of a Spring Mount address, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding when she appeared in court on Wednesday. The court was told that on May 19, at 9:45 a.m., the complainant was at her home in Pitfour when Campbell came inside, roughly bumped into her, and then ran outside. Campbell then used a stick to hit the complainant on her head and hand, resulting in a head wound which bled.
"Why did you do that, ma'am? Why did you hit her?" presiding Parish Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton asked Campbell.
"A she first hit me, that's why mi lick her back," Campbell replied.
The complainant, who entered the courtroom using a cane, and had to sit in a chair at one point, told the court that she had to get stitches for her injuries. It was also disclosed that the two women have had previous altercations, resulting in a protection order being issued.
"Why were you at the home of the complainant? Did you remember that there was a protection order in place preventing you from using any sort of violence or causing any sort of harm that would affect the complainant?" Judge Fairclough-Hylton asked the defendant.
"I went to look for my daughter. When I went there, the lady saw me and she took her walking stick and pointed it in my face," said Campbell.
Fairclough-Hylton subsequently set October 2 for Campbell's sentencing hearing, and ordered a social enquiry report to be prepared for her. Campbell was also remanded and ordered to submit her fingerprints to the police.
