Cabbie offers free rides - Kind-hearted ‘1 Voice’ to treat passengers on New Year’s Eve
Taxi operator O'Niel Davis is set to continue his tradition of offering free rides to his customers to show appreciation for their patronage throughout the year.
The cabbie, popularly known as '1 Voice', said he will be offering free rides on New Year's Eve as a gesture of appreciation.
"Mi believe seh yuh have to give to get, even though that nuh mean seh the same people weh yuh give to a guh give back to you," said Davis, who has been a taxi driver for 15 years.
His heartwarming tradition began on December 27, 2023, when Davis gave nearly 100 passengers free rides as a Christmas gift and a heartfelt thank you for their support. Since then, it's become his signature gesture, offering free rides after major holidays on his Cross Roads to Arnett Gardens route in St Andrew.
But Davis didn't stop there -- he also introduced 'Dolla Thursdays', slashing fares to just $100 per ride, saving passengers $50. And for children, the kindness doubles -- they ride for only $50. The initiative has been a hit and will continue into 2025.
As the new year approaches, Davis' unwavering generosity and positive outlook are reminders that even small acts of kindness can create ripple effects of joy and blessings. He said that despite the challenges he faces, including the pressures of life, he continues to give because he feels blessed by God.
"Mi blessed, mi can't complain. Even when life nuh smooth sailing an' mi have mi stress, God always a bless mi, so mi have to bless others when mi can. Things nuh easy and people have dem struggles, some can barely find food, so mi afi give back when mi can," he said, adding that his generosity has paid off in more ways than one, because his loyal customer base has doubled as a result of his charitable actions.
"Mi love mi loyal customers dem, and all who nuh loyal to me. Because weh mi learn from doing this is that when yuh bless others, God a guh open doors fi yuh, suh yuh can't lose," he shared.
He also told THE STAR that he hopes that in the new year, more taxi operators will follow his lead and give back to their passengers.
"Yuh can't worry 'bout the money yah lose in one day because, trust me, when yuh do good, good a guh follow yuh; and yuh probably all start mek more money than weh yuh did a mek before," he said.
