St Mary Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the Free Hill area of Port Maria

The St Mary police are investigating a shooting in Port Maria, St Mary on Thursday that left a taxi driver wounded.

According to police reports the incident unfolded around 6:50 a.m., when the taxi operator reportedly picked up a passenger along the Free Hill main road and shortly after stopped to collect another.

While picking up the second passenger loud explosions were heard.

Moments later a green motor car approached.

It is understood that a male occupant of the vehicle was seen firing several shots in the direction of the taxi.

The taxi driver sustained gunshot wounds to his upper body but managed to drive to safety and was assisted by the police.

No one else was injured during the incident.

"The St Mary police are actively investigating this matter and we are reassuring residents that every effort is being made to ensure their safety, "said Anthony Wallace, Acting Superintendent of police for the St Mary Division.

"Patrols and operations are being conducted to address concerns and maintain public order. Anyone with information that can assist in this case is urged to contact the St Mary Police at 876-994-4222, Crime Stop at 311, or the nearest police station, "he added.
