Teens arrested after cops find $28 million and illegal gun
A staggering $28 million in cash as well as a Glock 17 pistol were reportedly found in the possession of two Portland teenagers on Saturday.
The teens, a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, both from Buff Bay, were charged with multiple firearm-related offences, including possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition, using premises to store a prohibited weapon, and stockpiling unauthorised ammunition.
Reports from the Buff Bay police indicate that around 8 a.m. on March 29, law enforcement officers conducted an intelligence-led operation at a business establishment in the area. During the search, a Glock 17 pistol, sixty-six 9mm cartridges, and cash amounting to more than $28 million were discovered and seized.
Police said they found US$46,300 (approximately J$7.2 million) and J$21,314,202.
The two juveniles were taken into custody and later charged following a question-and-answer session.
The Buff Bay teens are among three youngsters charged with gun-related offence in the parish in recent days. On Wednesday, a 17-year-old was among six individuals arrested after detectives from the Portland Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) seized a high-powered rifle and other prohibited items.
Along with the teen, three Portland women and a businessman were charged in connection with the seizure. They are
Krystal-Gay McLean, 37, a sales representative from Long Road, Portland; Natalie Bell, 36, a nail technician from Mount Pleasant, and Tamara Edwards, 59, from Murton Pen, Manchioneal.
Randell McLean, 32, a businessman from Murton Pen, Manchioneal, was also charged.
According to reports from the Manchioneal police, officers executed an operation at a premises in Long Road around 8 a.m. During the search, law enforcement recovered an ISSC MK 22 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, twenty-eight 12-gauge cartridges, ten 5.56 cartridges, six .38 cartridges, one 9mm cartridge, and three magazines.
The court date for the accused is currently being finalised.
