Head coach delighted with Alphansus Davis’ performance at Champs
HEAD COACH OF Alphansus Davis High, Megan Wilson-Copeland, is on a high following her team's performance at last week's ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs).
The girls finished 10th with 62 points, while the boys ended in a three-way tie for 20th place with Sydney Pagon High and Vere Technical, each scoring 14.
"I am elated about both the girls and boys' overall performances at Champs. We have quality athletes who have trained well, and I am not surprised by their performances, as I knew they would put on a show," said Wilson-Copeland.
The only female coach locally in charge of both male and female teams, Wilson-Copeland has been coaching the girls since 2010 and took over the boys' team in 2023 following the departure of Milton Sergeant to Foga Road High.
The most outstanding performance among the girls came in Class Two, where Alikay Reynolds bagged two gold medals. She won the 800m in 2:11.58 and the 1500m in 4:41.29.
Tabbrel Williams finished fifth in the Class Two 800m and seventh in the 1500m, Shanika Lindsay placed fourth in the Class Two 200m and fifth in the 400m, and Ameiah Samuel placed seventh in the Class One 800m and 1500m. Jessica Francis placed fourth in the Class Four long jump and fifth in the high jump. In the relays, their sprint medley team finished second behind Edwin Allen High and sixth in the 4x400m.
Raheem Palmer delivered the best performance for the boys' team. He clocked 1:51.88 for third in the Class One 800m and he also placed third in 3:58.42 in the 1500m.
Wilson-Copeland believes the team can achieve even more with greater support.
"It is amazing to see how, as a small programme, we have done so well with limited resources," she shared. "We rely heavily on internal fundraising, and as the head of physical education and the sports coordinator, I have to organise in this area," she explained.
She also expressed gratitude to Adidas for their support.
"I would like to thank Adidas for assisting us with running tights and shoes. This has helped to ease some of the financial burden on the school," she said.
