Woman loses over $250,000 in employment scam
A 29-year-old pharmacy technician has been charged after stealing over $250,000 from a woman under the guise of offering employment opportunity overseas.
Kadeane Swaby of Mountain View, West Gate Hills, St James is charged with larceny by trick.
Reports from the Montego Bay police are that in 2023 Swaby persuaded a woman that her uncle could guarantee an employment opportunity for her in the Cayman Islands.
The woman gave her passport and $18,000 to initiate the hiring process and then paid $255,000 to secure the position.
The woman enquired about the job as it was taking too long and was given numerous excuses.
The woman then contacted Swaby's uncle via a social networking platform and was told that he was unaware of the arrangement and that he does not provide employment.
After realising she had been conned, the woman confronted Swaby, who pledged to repay her by September 21, 2024.
When a refund was not received, a police report was filed.
The accused woman was detained on Monday, March 31, after the complainant pointed her out to the police.
She was charged on Thursday, April 03 based on the statement recorded from the aggrieved woman.
