A ‘jacket’ that fits - DNA rules out man who thought he was the father
For over two years, Michael* poured his love and energy into raising Dianna's* youngest child, fully convinced he was the boy's father.
Dianna and Michael were never officially together, as she was in a relationship with Jim*. But Michael was a steady presence in the life of the child. He changed diapers, read bedtime stories, and was always bonding with the little one.
However, a recent DNA test, facilitated through a collaboration between this newspaper and Polygenics Consulting, shattered his world as the results revealed a heartbreaking truth. Michael is not the child's biological father.
"I feel disappointed because me and that child have a father-son bond," Michael said, his voice thick with emotion.
"Even though he spent time with him biological father, me and him still have that father-son relationship because I really thought he was mine," he added.
Now in his early 30s, Michael had reconnected with Dianna years after their 12-year relationship had ended. Together, they shared a nine-year-old daughter and maintained a strong friendship and co-parenting bond. Although Dianna was in a relationship with Jim, the father of her second daughter, Michael and Dianna occasionally shared moments of intimacy.
When she got pregnant with her third child, Dianna was involved with both men, and admitted that she wasn't using protection. After the birth of her son, she listed Jim as the father on the birth certificate, thinking he was getting a jacket.
She jumped at the opportunity to benefit from a free DNA test from Polygenics Consulting, hoping it would prove that Michael is the father of her son. The test proved her wrong!
"I really thought that he was the father, suh mi really disappointed but...it's okay," Dianna told T HE WEEKEND STAR said in a soft voice.
She also explained that she was grateful for the test results, because although she never told Jim there is a possibility he was not her son's father, he recently started to question the child's paternity. Armed with the facts, she can confidently declare that the 'jacket' she thought she gave Jim fits to perfection.
She is adamant that there was never another man in the picture, and so the elimination of Michael as the father leaves Jim as the only possibility.
"Him seh di baby don't really look like him, but more like me, suh he has been asking me if the baby a fi him, and now mi can seh fi sure he is the father," Diana said.
Meanwhile, despite the crushing DNA results, Michael said that his love for the child remains unchanged.
"Nothing will change because the love I have for him won't disappear," he said. "It's going to be the same relationship, and mi a guh continue fi help take care of him."
