Fisherman charged with murder

April 24, 2025

Marlon Smith, a 29-year-old fisherman from Paradise district, Smithfield in Westmoreland, has become the second individual charged in connection with the shooting death of 27-year-old businesswoman Shantal Calder-Whittingham, known as 'Pookie,' in his community on August 12, 2023.

Calder-Whittingham, a resident of Brighton district, Little London, was killed following a violent altercation. According to reports from the Savanna-la-Mar police, around 3:30 p.m. on that day, an argument broke out between Calder-Whittingham, her partner, and Smith. During the dispute, Smith allegedly threw rum bottles at the couple, hitting them and causing injuries.

It is further alleged that Smith later returned with a firearm, pointing it at the couple, which led them to report the incident to the police. After making the report, the couple returned to their community and were sitting in their vehicle when they were confronted by Smith and three other men, all armed with handguns. Calder-Whittingham and her partner attempted to flee on foot, but the men chased them and opened fire. When the gunfire stopped, Calder-Whittingham was found with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Following an investigation, Smith's co-accused, Odane Barron, was arrested in Westmoreland on August 25, 2023, during an operation. Barron has been charged with murder, shooting with intent, and unauthorised possession of a prohibited weapon.

Smith, however, managed to evade capture until March 31, when he was apprehended during a police operation. He faces charges of murder, shooting with intent, and using a firearm to commit a felony. His court date is pending.

The third shooter remains at large.
