Diddy convicted on prostitution charges, acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering
Hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs was found guilty Wednesday of prostitution-related offenses but was acquitted of more serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could have led to a life sentence.
The verdict, delivered after three days of jury deliberations, presents a mixed outcome for the 55-year-old music executive. While he avoids the most severe penalties, Combs still faces up to 10 years in prison -- a sentence that may spell the end of his decades-long career as a producer, entrepreneur, and media personality.
Combs was convicted of flying people around the country, including his girlfriends and paid male sex workers, to engage in sexual encounters, a felony violation of the federal Mann Act.
But the jury of eight men and four women acquitted Combs of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges, related to allegations that he used his money, power and frightening physical force to manipulate his girlfriends into hundreds of drug-fuelled sex marathons with the men.
In a statement, attorney Douglas H Wigdor -- representing R&B singer Cassie Ventura, Combs' former girlfriend and a key witness -- praised her for her bravery in testifying. "Although the jury did not find Combs guilty of sex trafficking Cassie beyond a reasonable doubt, she paved the way for a guilty verdict on transportation for prostitution," Wigdor said.
"By coming forward with her experience, Cassie has left an indelible mark on both the entertainment industry and the fight for justice," he added.
Combs remained composed as the verdict was read. Turning to his family in the courtroom, he smiled and said, "I'll be home soon. I love you, baby. I love you, Mom."
Sentencing is expected in the coming weeks.
