Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother killed in a car accident in Spain
(AP) Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother, Andre Silva, 25, were killed Thursday morning in a car crash near Zamora, Spain, when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames, according to police.
The Spanish Civil Guard say the brothers were alone in the vehicle and suspect a blown tire during an overtaking attempt may have caused the accident. Their bodies were found in the charred wreckage and are undergoing forensic analysis.
The crash occurred while Jota and Silva, who is also a Portuguese soccer player, were travelling eastward along an isolated stretch of highway about an hour west of Zamora.
It is not yet confirmed who was driving.
Jota had recently married Rute Cardoso and was vacationing following a successful season, which included helping Liverpool win the Premier League and Portugal secure the Nations League title.
Liverpool FC said the club was "devastated by the tragic passing" and requested privacy for the family. Fans began gathering outside Anfield Stadium to pay tribute.
Jota scored 65 goals in 182 matches for Liverpool and was admired both on and off the pitch. His brother, Silva, played in Portugal's lower leagues.
Tributes poured in from across the sports world, including Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, and Rafael Nadal. Portugal's Prime Minister called the deaths "tragic," and the Portuguese Football Federation has ordered a minute of silence at upcoming matches.
UEFA and the Premier League also issued condolences, calling Jota's death a heartbreaking loss to the sport.
