Member of Parliament for St James Southern, Homer Davis, has described a $23-million road repair project for his constituency as "timely and deliberate".

Work is slated to commence on the repair of a 670-metre stretch of roadway in the Richmond Hill area of Catadupa on August 11. The $23-million project is a partnership between the St James Municipal Corporation and the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF).

The work is expected to be completed in six weeks and expected to benefit more than 1,500 residents.

"This investment is very timely and deliberate. I thank the partnership between the St James Municipal Corporation and the TEF," Davis said at last Wednesday's contract signing.

He said residents had expressed a need for improvement of the road to support their livelihoods and daily movement. The road repairs are expected to enhance access to areas such as Croydon in the Mountains, which is a popular heritage and eco-tourism destination.

St James Southern is one of the constituencies being closely watched in the upcoming general elections. The constituency was represented by the People's National Party's (PNP) Derrick Kellier between 1989 and 2020, but fell to Davis of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the 2020 general elections.

Nekeisha Burchell is contenting the seat for the PNP in the upcoming elections.
