Track repairs ongoing after Windalco bauxite train derailed in St Catherine
Work crews from UC Rusal are actively working to restore a section of the train track in the Bog Walk Gorge, St Catherine, after three cars from a Windalco bauxite train derailed on Saturday afternoon, just before reaching the tunnel in the gorge.
The derailment caused significant disruption, forcing the temporary closure of the gorge while Jamaica Public Service (JPS) crews repair a damaged utility pole and restore electricity to the area.
Human Resource Director Glendon Johnson said the repairs aim to restore the track for vehicles that will extract alumina from the submerged cars before efforts are made to remove them.
He said a UC Rusal investigative team is probing the cause of the derailment, with no completion date set.
Windalco has launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment. However, residents living alongside the track have expressed concerns, claiming they have not seen any maintenance work carried out on the railway line in that area for years.
