Martial artists shine in rainy Canada

Junior martial artists from Jamaica Taekwon-Do Association, Mandeville, returned home with 15 medals, eight gold included, from the International Taekwon-Do Federation's 2015 North American and Caribbean Taekwon-Do Championships in Vancouver, Canada.

All coloured belts, the juniors' haul was completed by two silver and five bronze, won over two days of competition at Richmond Olympic Oval, Greater Vancouver, where rain, team officials said, restricted their intended celebrations.

Red belts Justyn Reid and Jahsiah McLean won gold in sparring while Jomo Godfrey took home silver. In patterns, Godfrey and McLean each won bronze medals.

Among the blue belts, Janiel Lopez struck double gold in sparring and pattern, so too did Trevon Richards in the green belt division.

Other green belts picking up medals were Delroy Palmer who won gold in sparring and a bronze in patterns. Chancois Christopher returned with a silver in sparring and bronze in patterns.

Zyair Roberts, a white belt, struck gold in sparring and also won a bronze in patterns.

Joleen Masters, chief instructor, Mandeville Taekwon-Do, travelled as umpire for the November 7-8 tournament where two seniors, Ackeem Lawrence and Richard Stone also won gold medals in sparring.
