Hurdlers star at Central Champs
Shannon Kallawan of Edwin Allen High and St Jago High's Timor Barrett stole the show on yesterday's opening day of the Digicel Central Championships at G.C. Foster College. Both recorded personal best times in winning the girls' and boys' 400m hurdles open events, respectively.
In a very competitive race which included four athletes who have gone below 60 seconds this season Kallawan clocked an impressive 57.20 to finish ahead of Vere Technical's Sanique Walker (58.93) and Shian Salmon of Hydel High who was third overall in 1:01.30.
Barrett surged home late to cross the line in 52.26 beating Ryan Holmes of Edwin Allen who also clocked a personal best 52.70 with third going to Manchester High's Nicholas Alexander who won his heat in 55.19.
"I am very pleased with my time today," said Barrett who added that he is looking forward to the remainder of the season.
There were also some good results in the field with Vere Technical's Class Three long jumper Brittany Anderson, leading the way. Despite competing against a strong headwind, she produced 5.75 metres to win the event ahead of Edwin Allen High duo Lotiva Brown (5.59m) and Danae Bailey 5.39m.
