Galaxy of stars at Racers Grand Prix

The first JN Racers Grand Prix, set to start at 7 p.m. today, should be a thriller. A galaxy of stars headed by the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt, are ready to dazzle track and field fans.

Organising committee member, Dave Myrie, said on the eve of the meet that everything is in place for a stellar meet.

"It has taken a lot of planning and a lot of work has been put in, and we expect a spectacle, a great show," said Myrie.

There has been two big withdrawals, World leader in the women's 100 metres Tori Bowie of the United States and her countrywoman Natasha Hastings in the 400 metres, but the meet will still have enough to delight the fans.

Undoubtedly, from a local standpoint it is the final two events, the women's 100m at 9:20 p.m and the men's 100m, 10 minutes later that will attract most attention.

In the women's race all eyes will be on the reigning Olympic and World champion Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce. Plagued by a toe injury which has affected her training, Fraser Pryce finished at the back of the 100m field in the recent Diamond League race in Eugene, Oregon, and today's event will definitely be a big test for her.

best form

She will battle with the Carmelita Jeter, who is also searching for her best form and Trinidad and Tobago's Kelly-Ann Baptiste.

Christine Day, who ran a season's best 50.86 in the 400m at the Birmingham Diamond League a week ago, will lead the charge in the one-lap event where she will be challenged by the likes of Anastasia Leroy and veteran Shericka Williams.

Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas is expected to stay perfect inside the National Stadium when she competes in the women's 200m at 8:35 pm. Miller clocked a wind-aided 22.14 at the recent Jamaica International, and could go much faster this time around. Jamaica's Aneisha McLaughlin is her main rival.

Fans will get a preview of the National Senior Championships 100 metres clash as the country's best will face the starter in tonight's event.

Bolt who will be making his first appearance on local soil in the event for some time will be challenged by Yohan Blake, who has a season's best 9.95. Bolt (9.98), Kemar Bailey Cole and Asafa Powell (10.01), and Nickel Ashmeade (10.03) are expected to thrill the thousands of fans.

Another exciting men's event will be the special 300 metres clash at 7:55 p.m. Two of the world's best in the 400m, Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa and LaShawn Merritt of the United States will battle.
