Young Sunshine Girls will be ready for World Champs - Guy

Newly appointed head coach of Jamaica's Under-21 netballers Janet Guy is confident that national side will be ready in time for this year's World Youth Championships in Botswana.

Guy said despite the financial constraints affecting Netball Jamaica, she is still hoping to get a number of practise with games with overseas opponents.

"The most we can do is to conduct some camps on the weekend to get in more than enough because down the road we have to get in some practise games," said Guy.

"We have teams around, so we are going to use some of these local teams to give us some matches, and there is also the males, and so we will be looking to see what they can give us, too," Guy added.

Guy, who took over the job two-weeks ago, told STAR Sports that they have stepped up their fitness programme because once the team is fit everything else will fall into place.

"We are working on the fitness and we are working on skills, and while we do that, we are working on some other areas so that we can get the team ready," said Guy.

Few injuries

"The girls have been responding well. There are very little injuries because we have two girls with mild injuries that we are looking about, but they have been coping with it," Guy said.

The vastly experienced Guy guided Jamaica to its best ever placing at the World Youth Championships, when they won silver in 2000 in Wales.

The Under-21s won a bronze medal at the Championships in Glasgow four years ago.

Conrad Parkes will be Guy's assistant.
