Donald Quarrie gunning for two medals

HAVING medalled at Champs for the first time last year when Jordan Anderson won bronze in the boys class three 800m, Donald Quarrie High School is hungry for more success, despite losing their star athlete to defending champions Calabar.

Coach Nicholas Pummels coach said the bar has even been set higher as DQ aim at, not another, but two medals this year.

Shavian Myers and Christopher Malcolm are Pummels' medal hopefuls.

"I am looking forward to us winning two medals because I am confident these two boys will do extremely well for us but we are aware that anything can happen, like injuries. The boys are very focussed so I know that they will do well," he said.

Personal best

Myers is down to compete in the boys' class two 400 metres. He has clocked a personal best 52.40 seconds this season. Malcolm is set to participate in the boys' class three 400m with a personal best of 56.23, also set this season.

Donald Quarrie will be sending a small all-male team of 13 athletes to Champs. However, Pummels said they are aiming to finish much higher in the points standings this year.

"We finished 29th last year and we are hoping to better this position this year because we will be in two finals, so anything is possible," he pointed out.

"It is not only medals alone that can let you finish up in the points table. If we have two boys finishing fifth in finals, then there are lot of points for us," he added.
