Richards beats back the pain
Edwin Allen High's Fiona Richards broke through the pain barrier to smash the Class One discus record at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships yesterday.
Richards hurled the discus 53.04 metres to improve on the 52.73m mark set by Excelsior High's Shanice Love last year.
The 2015 Class Two discus and shot put gold medalist told STAR Sports that she wanted more but an injury to her back slowed her up.
"I am not at my best. I am actually in some pain but overall I execute well. I had a back issue from my time at Buff Bay High and it has started to act up again. But I just had this mindset and this confidence that I was going to break the record and I did," she said..
Richards who is also participating in the shot put and javelin events at the annual championship, is confident of taking the shot put/discus double but she feels she will fall short in the javelin.
"I am not expected to do much in the javelin. I am hoping to give my team some points but I am definitely looking to take home the shot put," she said.
