St Jago aim to top Group F

St Jago High School had a losing start to their Manning Cup season after going down 3-2 to Holy Trinity in the opening match in Group F.

However, the Monk Street-based school rebounded with back-to-back victories over Clan Carty and Jose Mari to move three points adrift of group leaders, Holy Trinity, who have maximum nine points.

St Jago coach, Davion Ferguson, declared that his team wants to top the group and intends to keep Holy Trinity in touching distance.

"We are now on six points after two games. It is not where we want to be but it's better than being on zero. We have to take it a game at a time," he said.

First win

"We want top spot in the group and so we have to match Holy Trinity results, so that when we meet them again that can be the decider, whether we finish first or second in the group. I had no doubt that we can win this group," he added.

Ferguson put the Holy Trinity defeat down to the nerves of his players, and he thought it was important to get their first win at home after their opening game ended in disappointment. He also believes the team will continue to make rapid improvements.

"After the first game, we played at home and it was important that we won at home. The first game we lost to Holy Trinity and the confidence was really down, so being at home for the second time was important, we got a positive result," he said.

In St Jago's quest for a third straight win against Ascot today they will look to captain Kimani Gibbon, Shaquille Wright and Andre Thomas to lead them to victory.
