Holy Trinity outshoot Selassie in Manning Cup

Top seed Holy Trinity turned in a spectacular performance to beat Haile Selassie 4-2 on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals of the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup at the Constant Sports Complex yesterday.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Holy Trinity levelled the tie 2-2 courtesy of second-half goals from Fabrizzio Burton in the 68th minute and Travar Littlejohn in the 70th minute, which sent the match into penalty shoot-out.

The Devon Anderson-coached Holy Trinity then held their nerves in the shoot-out to come away with the victory. Anderson said he was happy with his team's performance because they had to pull out all to the stops to secure the win.

"It was a tough game because my players had to really dig deep to score two goals," said Anderson. Haile Selassie really put up a strong fight but in the end, we came out the winners on penalties," he said.

Finding form

St George's College also advance to the quarter-finals with a 4-0 victory over St Jago. The Light Blues won the tie 5-0 aggregate.

The Georgians were led to victory courtesy of a hat-trick from Romario Harding in the third, 42nd and 61st minutes. Former Kingston College player, Jahmal Pusey, also scored for St George's in the 36th minute.

St George's assistant coach, Marcel 'Fuzzy' Gayle, said that his team is finding form at the right time and they are now looking to put on a good showing in the quarter-finals of the competition.

"We are getting better with each game that we play," said Gayle. "We are not conceding any goals and we have been working on that aspect of our game to ensure that we keep a clean sheet.

"There are all quality teams in the next round of the competition, but we are going to take it one team at a time because we want to continue playing good football," he said.

St Catherine also advanced to the quarter-finals after a 3-1 aggregate victory over Hydel in their return game at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday. St Catherine won the first leg 2-0.
