Western Jamaica optimistic about Rusea's

The rural area is confident daCosta Cup champions Rusea's High School can break the winning streak of over 10 years of the urban area teams in the ISSA/FLOW Olivier Shield this evening in the National Stadium.

Rusea's, who had a 2-1 win over rural area favourites Clarendon College to take their 11th daCosta Cup title last Saturday, will go up against the Manning Cup Champions Jamaica College (JC).

Head coach of rural area powerhouse St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), Omar 'Rambo' Wedderburn, who considers JC's head coach Miguel Coley as a good friend, said that he is in a difficult position as he will have to support Rusea's as they are from the rural area, despite his friendship with Coley.

"Myself and Miguel share a brotherly relationship but I will have to bring a little bias to Rusea's and say 100 percent country," said Wedderburn.

Orville Powell, president of Red Stripe Premier League club Montego Bay United, believes that factors like the quality of corporate area football and the club like structure of JC will make it hard for a rural area team to break the urban area dominance. He, however, said it is also about who wants it more, and he hopes that this will prove to be Rusea's.

"It won't be easy," Powell said. "We know the corporate teams are doing a lot better in terms of structure, but it is possible as we know Rusea's is football," said Powell.

After losing the Oliver Shield on penalties to JC last year, Cornwall College's coach Dr Dean Weatherly believe Rusea's has what it takes to knock JC off their pedestal whilst admitting it will not be an easy task with the match being played in the corporate area.

"They have the team, a good coaching staff, and the team is disciplined, so they might be able to counter JC's game especially with their style of play," said Weatherly.
