Tammi-Terrelle Smith, acting principal of Herbert Morrison Technical High School (HMTHS), has credited coach Dave Black for the school's basketball success.

Herbert Morrison last Friday won their fourth straight ISSA/Western Conference basketball Under-16 and Under-19 championships.

Along with the four back-to-back Under-16 and Under-19 titles, Herbert Morrison recorded two straight Under-14 titles in 2016 and 2017. The Under-14 team will do battle later this year and Herbert Morrison is aiming for another three-peat.

"Dave Black, who is also a teacher here, has been an inspirational, innovative, and creative coach. He has been with us for some time now and I'm impressed by how he has a very good rapport with the team. The boys have the greatest respect for him and I guess that's why they have been doing so well," said Smith.

Smith said that the victories have uplifted the department.

MORE COHESIVE UNIT

"The persons in the department gel together as a cohesive unit so one can see the results based on that. ... If it continues like this, I am expecting greater results year by year," said Smith.

Alek Gilchrist, who was awarded the Under-19 competition's MVP, was also awarded for most steals, most blocked shots, and most assists. Brendon Dawkins provided great support, picking up the Top Scorer Award.

For the Under-16 competition, Kyle Frazer picked up the Top Three-point Shooter Award, while Anthony Thorpe received the Top Free-throw Shooter Aaward.
