Petersfield's Watson promises brilliant season

World Under-18 400m champion Antonio Watson of Petersfield High School says he intends to be unbeaten on the track this year.

"My objective for this season is to win as many overall events as possible, including the Carifta Games, Champs and later down in the year, World Youths," he said.

Watson was the recipient of the Gleaner/Youthlink Award for Boys at the 40th staging of the Milo Western Relays. The relays took place at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall, St James.

Kevona Davis of Edwin Allen High School lifted the Gleaner/Youthlink Award in the girl's section. Watson and Davis were awarded for being the most outstanding athletes in 2017.

"To be awarded by The Gleaner must be a special reason so it's a great feeling," said Watson, who won gold in the 400m at the IAAF World U18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, last year.

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 

"Look out for great things because I am coming strong. I know they are a lot of people out there want to overthrow my accomplishments so I know I'll have to work hard," said Watson.

Meanwhile, western schools were responsible for two of the records that fell on Saturday. Brithon Senior (13.74) of Ruseas lowered the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles Class 1 record of 13.96 set four years ago by Yannick Hart, formerly of Wolmer's Boys.

The other record by a western team was by Roshane McLeod of St Elizabeth Technical who posted (14.30) to win the Class 3 boys 100m hurdles. McLeod erased the three-year-old record that was set by Tyrese Smith of Kingston College.
