Speid: We achieved our objectives

Cavalier held on to the last of six Red Stripe Premier League playoff spots on the final round of matches in the preliminary round yesterday.

The Rudolph Speid-coached team edged UWI FC on goal difference after playing to a 0-0 draw with second place Arnett Gardens FC at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

Cavalier and UWI FC both finished on 48 points with the former having a goal difference of seven and the latter, four. Harbour View also grabbed a play-off spot after a 1-0 win over leaders Portmore United.

Speid who had said before the match that they were not worried about making the cut as their fate was in their hands, said his club achieved their main objectives for the season.

"I don't think we narrowly got there. We knew what we had to do, two matches ago. We knew we needed four points and we played play to get these four points with two clean sheets in the process," said Speid.

"The playoffs were the second thing we wanted to accomplish this year. The first one was to really establish Cavalier as a brand of young and exciting star players who can be competitive. We did achieve both our objectives on the last day," he added.

After seeing defending champions Arnett Gardens win the title last year finishing in the same place as they have, Speid is hoping lightning can strike the same place twice this season.

"Definitely, once we reach the playoffs there is only one thing we have in mind now and that's to win the league. We are going after it as hard as we can and we think we have a good chance as anybody to win the title now," said Speid.

The final round of matches in the 2018 Red Stripe Premier League saw the playoffs being dominated by KSAFA teams with Tivoli Gardens, Waterhouse and Harbour View FC making up third to fifth place respectively.
