Brilliant Fagan leads Holland to historic title

Tatiana Fagan, captain of Holland High School female basketball team, was instrumental in her team securing the ISSA/Western Conference Girls Open Basketball title.

The point guard, who helped her team to a 29-6 win over Mount Alvernia High School at the MoBay Cricket Club Court during Thursday's final, said she is happy her school was able to turn the tables on last year's champions.

"It feels great to win this year because we have been working hard. Last year it was the same (unbeaten going into the finals), but we lost the finals, so we were determined this year to not have a repeat of last year," said Fagan after their overwhelming win.

It was Holland's first hold on the title.

Fagan, who stands at just 5'1", picked up individual awards for top blocked shots, most steals and most assist.

"For me, personally, it feels really good to know I made a big contribution to the team," said Fagan, who has her eyes set on enrolling into G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sports September.

"Our team played this well throughout the entire season. It was good to see us do it again in the finals, putting up an overall team effort, as that is something we always strive for," she added.

Coach of Holland Ricardo Brooks said that Fagan's dedication to the game has resulted in her team now reaping success. He also had kind words for her supporting cast.

"Tatiana Fagan and Zhane Lawrence (competition MVP) have led the team right throughout the season. They, along with the twins, Shanniel (top free throw shooter) and Shenniel Johnson (top three points shooter), were the cornerstone of the team," said Brooks.
