GK Gordon a mature leader at Herbert Morrison

Herbert Morrison Technical goalkeeper and captain, David Gordon, is extremely pleased with the effort of the school's young team after they qualified for the second round of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup for the first time in five years.

The 17-year-old Gordon, dubbed 'baby giant' as he is six feet, seven inches tall, has called on his young team to maintain their focus.

"It's just for the youngsters to come out, work hard and listen. It's a learning process for them and it has been going fairly well for us as a team, so we are just looking forward to the second round," said Gordon, whose team rebounded after suffering defeats in their first two games.

"The first two games were just a lack of commitment. As time went on, coach Leacroft Letman went back to the drawing board and showed us where we went wrong. Now we are heading into the second round," the Herbert Morrison skipper said.

Gordon, who played basketball at the national Under-17 level, said that experience has helped his goalkeeping tremendously.

"It has helped a lot in the reading of the game and in my ball handling so it is a plus," said Gordon.

Gordon, a former national Under-15 invitee, is hoping to make a return after this season.

"Yes, it's a work in progress. Hopefully, after this season, I will catch the eyes of the coaches in the national set-up and then I'll take it from there."

Leacroft Letman, the coach of Herbert Morrison, is happy to have a mature individual as his last line of defence.

"Maturity speak for itself. I think this year he has matured into a fine young man, who is ready to lead and put his school back on the map in football. He has done it in basketball where he was MVP at the all-island finals. At this stage of his life it's a different David in this team. He has some young troops in front of him and he is leading them to victory," said Letman.
