Jakomba is one of the best schoolboy strikers

Warren Barrett, the assistant coach of Cornwall College, has applauded his striker Aiden Jakomba who scored a brace on Saturday to help his team march into the semifinals of the ISSA Champions Cup.

Cornwall College beat Camperdown 2-0 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, thanks to Jokomba who netted in the 68th and 74th minutes. The striker has now scored 18 goals this season.

“He always delivers, whether he is 100 per cent or not. He is one of the best schoolboy strikers in the country. He proved it again with two wonderful and clinical strikes,” said Barrett.

Last month, Jakomba said that Cornwall College has set itself a target of winning the Olivier Shield, which is the symbol of schoolboy supremacy on the island.

"However, my personal objective is to score the chances that my teammates create for me, and, hopefully, finish with 20-plus goals, leading my team to win as many titles as possible this season," he said.

"I think we have the team. Our bench is pretty strong in that any player can play at any given time, so we have the team to win the daCosta Cup and go on to the Olivier Shield."

HAVE IMPROVED

Barrett is most impressed with the way his team has been playing.

“It has been good. As the tournament has gone on we have improved with the key players coming to the fore. The captain, Shavon McDonald, Jokomba, Matthew (Thorpe), Solano (Birch) are experienced players, who we expect to lead from the front, and they have been doing that,” said Barrett.

Cornwall College semifinal draw is against St Georges College who dispatched STATHS 5-0 last Saturday. Barrett said they are looking forward to what he believes will be an exciting encounter.

“They are one of the better teams from the corporate area. I know coach Bertis (Neville) Bell well, he was one of my youth coaches when I played for the national youth team and was also a part of the historic qualification for France 98,” said Barrett.

“He is also a Brazilian supporter and that’s the way he coaches his team. They will enjoy moving the ball around from flank to flank, get crosses in or play them back for the strikers to finish. That’s the way we play as well… so we are looking forward to an exciting but tough challenge Friday.”
